Unforgotten (Unremembered)

Unforgotten (Unremembered)

Book Two in the Unremembered trilogy is an exciting, fast-paced romp through the centuries, with romance, science fiction and plenty of action to keep a teen reader engaged.

Sera, a genetically perfect human created in the labs of Diotech, is on the run from the scientists who made her. Since she was given the genetic ability to time travel, she settles in 1609 with Zen, the boy who helped her escape, and who has a fierce hold on her heart. They try to live a happy, safe life away from the horrors of Sera’s past, but it isn’t long before Sera’s extraordinary abilities cause Diotech to come looking. But when Zen falls mysteriously ill from a life-threatening disease, Sera knows she doesn’t have much time to save the one she loves.

This time, Diotech sends a new kind of agent to track Sera down; a man named Kaelen who might have more in common with Sera than she thinks. He’s come looking for a secret hidden deep in Sera’s memories that promises to reveal the answer to Zen’s illness --- an illness that might be affecting more people than just Zen. Together, Sera and Kaelen form a shaky alliance to get the antidote they both need.

Book Two in the Unremembered trilogy is an exciting, fast-paced romp through the centuries, with romance, science fiction and plenty of action to keep a teen reader engaged.

Their adventure takes them to New York City, 2032, where they follow a treasure hunt of hidden memories to uncover the forgotten secrets in Sera’s brain. Along the way, Sera meets allies from her past and learns more about Kaelen --- including the fact that he was created as the Adam to her Eve in the same Diotech labs she once knew.  But though they are the same, Kaelen has been “perfected” to follow the orders of evil Dr. Jans Alixter without resistance. And Sera wonders how much she can trust him.

The world Brody has created is fascinating and original. Though occasionally the twists and turns of the convoluted plot were hard to follow, the author’s interest in genetic modification and memory manipulation make this a unique addition to the genre. And the information revealed in the finale looks to make the third book in this planned trilogy even more interesting. I look forward to seeing more of Diotech’s nefarious plans.

The book does sometimes focus too heavily on the romantic lives of its characters, with the burgeoning love triangle between Kaelen, Sera and Zen often at the forefront of the plot. However, given that Zen spends most of the book unconscious and lying in bed, the romance feels a little one -sided. It is superfluous to such an interesting science fiction premise, and sometimes takes away from the action.

Overall, this was a fun book to read. Throughout, Brody writes excellent action sequences that are perfect for this kind of novel. The momentum, while slow in the beginning, really picks up once the characters leave 1609 for 2032, and never lets up. The ending will definitely leave readers longing for the next book.
