The Surprise Attack of Jabba the Puppett: An Origami Yoda Book

Dwight, and of course Origami Yoda, are back at McQuarrie Middle school for the spring semester, and things can finally get back to normal! Or as normal as can be when one of your seventh grade friends  wears a cape, insists on being called captain, responds to most comments or questions with the word “purple,” and otherwise only communicates through an origami finger puppet made to look like Yoda.

"THE SURPRISE ATTACK OF JABBA THE PUPPETT is another great book in this funny and witty series."

Dwight and Origami Yoda are the strange and hilarious heroes of Tom Angleberger’s Origami Yoda series and this latest installment is THE SURPRISE ATTACK OF JABBA THE PUPPETT.  This “case file” on the doings at McQuarrie finds the kids both excited about the return of Dwight and horrified at the new education program being introduced at their school: FunTime. Because standardized test scores slipped last year, Principal Rabbski and the county Board of Education are bringing in a new curriculum to get the scores back up. There are two big problems with the TIME to FOCUS on FUNDAMENTALS (or FunTime for short) program. First it is an inane set of worksheets and badly made videos and second, it replaces all the electives for the school including music, art and journalism classes. Tommy, Kellen, Jen, Mike, Amy and all their friends are mad and frustrated and believe it or not, willingly turn to Dwight and Origami Yoda for help. The kids try a few different methods from the political to the scientific, but in the end, nothing short of rebellion will defeat FunTime!

Soon Origami Yoda is joined by Han Foldo, Luke and Anakin Skyfolder, Queen Origamidala, Foldy-Wan Kenobi and an army of Origami Clones, and they have a plan in place to thwart Rabbski’s plans, do away with FunTime and get their favorite classes back. Along the way, they will have to deal with reluctant middle schoolers, a minor Ewok battle against hug-walkers, the terrible taste of cafeteria pizza boats, their own often baffling feelings for each other and of course, Principal Rabbski. And their rebellion will find help in the most unlikely of allies.

THE SURPRISE ATTACK OF JABBA THE PUPPETT is another great book in this funny and witty series. Dwight, despite his quirks (or perhaps because of them), has gone from being just the weird kid to a valued friend and one who encourages the others to embrace their own quirkiness and to think outside the box. The message of the importance of real learning and the role of the arts and creative expression in education is a fantastic one, and readers can’t help but cheers for the kids as they stand up for what they believe in.

The Star Wars jokes and puns are just as funny and clever as always --- you don’t need to be a big Star Wars fan to read this book, but it helps!  The multi-perspective narration can be a tad confusing, especially for readers not well familiar with all the different characters, but that hardly detracts from the story. The “doodles” in the book provide another layer of comedy and as always, there are great origami patterns in the back of the book, this time for Jabba the Puppett and Ewoks. All in all another enjoyable, entertaining and charming book from Angleberger.
