Mrs. Smith's Spy School for Girls

Mrs. Smith's Spy School for Girls

Beth McMullen’s debut middle grade novel, MRS. SMITH’S SPY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, which follows Abigail who discovers that her boarding school educates its students in more than just academics, but in the ways of espionage. Abigail gets pulled into an on going mission to find “Ghost” an evil villain that the school has been hunting for years. Abigail quickly begins to realize that she is much closer to the mission than she could have ever realized.

MRS. SMITH’S SPY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS is a fantastic adventure novel that has that nostalgic feel that novels set in boarding schools always seem to have and combined with the spy training it makes for a really fun story. I loved the use of a cellphone as a spy gadget with different tools to help Abigail, although I don’t know how a phone could shoot a rubber bullet but I’ll just go along with it.

Abigail is a fantastic protagonist who isn’t perfect, but is charismatic and the reader is able to really connect with her. It is great that this series shows female strength as only the young girls are spies at the school It is an awesome example for young girls that they can be and do anything.

The story does feel a bit older than middle grade at times, but it could appeal to teens and young adult readers. Some of the situations Abigail found herself in didn’t seem realistic for her age and made her feel older, especially since this book wasn’t a fantasy or science fiction my belief wasn’t already suspended so it felt like some of these events could never happen.

I really enjoyed the progression the story took with Abigail leaning on her friends to help with her mission it made for a campy and fun adventure story feel. I think it was great that Beth McMullen worked Abigail’s mother into the plot when most stories of this genre don’t ever have parents in them.

With the way that the book ended, I think there is so much more story to tell and I am excited to read more of this story.
