Jim Burke

Jim Burke has illustrated nine award-winning picture books with publishers including Harper Collins, Little, Brown & Company, and Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Burke has also created many paintings for gallery exhibitions, private collections and large-scale public spaces.

Burke earned his BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University in 1996, and his MFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford in 2012, graduating with highest honors. While living in Brooklyn, NY, he taught at PRATT Institute and his alma mater, SU. Since 2009, he has served as chairman of the Illustration Department at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Burke has placed heavy emphasis on community involvement for the department of nearly 200 students, collaborating with Easter Seals of New Hampshire, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of NH, The Palace Theatre, Intown Manchester, The Greater Mancheser Chamber of Commerce and the New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra.

He has been awarded a Gold Medal, and 23 Awards of Excellence for his illustration from the Society of Illustrators, as well as accolades from Print, 3x3, The New York Art Directors Club, and Communication Arts. Six of his picture books have received Awards of Excellence from The Original Art Show. Burke has also received Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum and Gold Best Book Awards, as well as starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist and School Library Journal. He has art directed the Dellas Graphics Frogfolio Calendar for the Syracuse, New York, based printer since 1997, consistently working with the top talents in the industry. He has been awarded seven medals from the Society of Illustrators for his art direction.

Burke lives in Manchester, N.H., with his wife Suzanne and their two young daughters.
