Fred Koehler

Fred Koehler

Fred Koehler wrote and illustrated his first book at age seven titled SAMMY THE SHOESTRING. It went on to win a shiny gold star sticker and an iced cinnamon bun from the vending machine in the teachers’ lounge. From that point on, Fred has never stopped doodling or writing stories (except when he tried to be a grown-up for a few years, which didn’t really work out).  He lives, works, and plays in Lakeland, Florida.

Written by Shelley Moore Thomas with illustrations by Fred Koehler - Animals , Children's 3-7, Fiction, Humor

Meet a mouse narrator who stubbornly insists that this book contains absolutely no dragons --- not even a claw nor a flame nor any large, pointy scales. Readers will know better --- and enjoy being in on the joke --- as a flock of dragons chase the mouse to the very end of the book within the book. Suspense builds humorously as the energetic text insists there are no dragons in this book, leading to a clever, unexpected ending. Clever artwork by Fred Koehler provides fun scenes to linger on and details to discover over multiple readings.

The genius of this picture book is that each illustration captures multiple, unexpected, and funny storylines as the narrator tells her shorter-than-ever stories. An original and incredibly deep combination of text and art invites readers to make up stories of their own.
